How to use a Balearic Sling
Просмотров 1,4 млн10 месяцев назад
In this video I demonstrate how I use a Balearic sling, the basics of the slinging technique and its variations, as well as a few considerations and methods that I use in the pursuit of combining power and accuracy.
How to make a Balearic sling
Просмотров 249 тыс.Год назад
This is how I make a Balearic sling for target practice and competitions. The truth is, these slings can be made from just about any material, not just the ones listed in the video i.e. sisal, hemp/linen, esparto, etc. These are just the materials that, from my experimentation, produce a better sling. Working with a camera between me and the braiding proved very challenging, so I'm sorry if it ...

Sling Power Data

(Video organised in order of increasing projectile weight.) Not attempting accuracy; my focus was simply getting velocity data. Target precision can however, be achieved with similar speeds. 41” Sling: 50g 73m/s - 133J , 3.7kgms 56.2g 75m/s = 158J , 4.2kgms 58.2g 74m/s = 159J , 4.3kgms 60.5g 72m/s = 157J , 4.4kgms 61.7g 72m/s = 160J , 4.4kgms 62.5g 69m/s = 149J , 4.3kgms 63.1g 70m/s = 155J , 4....

Shot at by Roman Slinger

(Headphones recommended to hear the higher frequencies of the whistle) Using a 24" Balearic style sling. Historically, Roman whistle-shot was fabricated from lead, which whistles much better than the clay used in the video. Thus, I plan to revisit this topic. Note: I was trying to sling near my camera without destroying it. If I had aimed for it, I would very likely have hit it.

Do you ever feel like good at something random in your life? I feel like i have absurb tossing accuracy. Like if i throw you your keys they'll land in your hand around the corner kind of thing. I sudden feel like now I'd make for a good slinger... I shoot a bow amateurly and i feel like i am accurate, but there is A LOT going on with the bow itself you don't realise til you start shooting. But slinging kinda looks a lot like tossing, but i guess moving the weight is different

Yep futher back in time ammo consistancy was harder because you had to use rocks you found. But later in time around ancient rome and greece cast lead "bullets" were used that were far more easy to get weights close.

My thoughts: 1) First thing after all the testing I thought of slinging a smaller plumbata before you mentioned the Kestros. 2) Try doing away with the loop and go for a small toggle which might allow for more precise release. The loop I believe is the reason your shots initially went left. 3) Why does it need to be a solid shaft? What if sections were attached by a thin rope with wider fletchings. It could be spun up easier like a sling and the fletching adds the drag to stabilise the flight and straighten out the whole thing. 4) Try a plumbata style head with the weight closer to the head but rather than a shaft and fletching, use long wide ribbon. This ought to create the stabilising drag but also be swung about in the sling fashion you're used to. 5) Add a small notch to the front of the shaft and throw with a lever like an atlatl or something flexible and long planted into the ground and weighed down at the base. Think of bending your fingers back with a long fingernail to flick something off. A crude catapult. I quite liked the video, it also filled me with a tonne of ideas so apologies for throwing them all at you.

I think you would increase your accuracy when you pinch grip the short string at the end of the arrow instead of putting your index finger through it.

The greatest problem to any hypothesis on their use hinges on throwing for distance or for accuracy which requires two completely different throwing techniques. The ancients had to have known about an aimed dart throw and it's accuracy. And of course distance technique which is very inaccurate. And throwing all 5 at once which is pretty awesome when tod did it.

Some slings include a cracker on the release cord. I like 'em loud, but everyone has their preference, so you can find/make quiet ones too. Doesn't affect the effectiveness.

Does the added hole have an effect on accuracy? Also is there a way to make them actually whistle. The reason i ask, is because your video reminded me of a video Joerg Sprave made about whistling ammunition. They achieved a more high pitch whistle, but i wonder if this is because they might be achieving higher speeds with the launch methods they are using. If so would you say the sound your camera picks up is a more accurate representation of the sound this ammunition would of made, and maybe the theory the expert has on the Joerg Sprave video is expecting too much from them. ruclips.net/video/7vJBKfQFD8I/видео.html

    • @Archaic-Arms
      @Archaic-Arms 24 дня назад

The reason these didn't whistle great is because the hole isn't really positioned correctly, the hole isn't as sharp as on metal bullets, and the velocity may not be as fast, as it was a short sling. A sling in truly professional hands should produce speeds upwards of 100m/s, so the sound of historical whistling bullets would have been very loud indeed.

Imagine what lead shot would do. I wonder if they used clay so they could carry more without getting weighed down or bc clay would shatter and not be reused in counter attacks
